In insurance, we spend a lot of time talking about things people hope never happen. Fires, accidents, losses – difficult situations we all hope to avoid.
During a recent account review with a long-time client, we were walking through some of those “what ifs” — the risks that exist for any business, even when everything is going well. As we talked through them, we both said it at the exact same time: “We should probably knock on wood.”
We paused, looked around the office, and laughed.
Was anything actually made of wood anymore? The desk? Maybe. The cabinets? Hard to tell. We shrugged, gave it our best attempt, and moved on — both hoping, as we always do, that those worst-case scenarios remain purely hypothetical.
A few weeks later, that same client stopped by again.
This time, he wasn’t there for an account review. He had something for me. He handed me a small, handmade piece of wood with the words “Knock on Wood” engraved on it — finished in Northpoint’s brand colors (you know we love our vibrant green!).

It was unexpected. Thoughtful. And honestly, it stopped me in my tracks.
That small gesture says a lot about what we believe insurance should be.
At Northpoint Insurance Advisors, we don’t view insurance as a transaction. We view it as a relationship. We sit across the table from people we know, people we see in the community, people whose livelihoods, families, and futures matter to us. When a client takes the time to turn a passing joke into a meaningful gift, it’s a reminder that trust is built through real conversations and genuine connection.
Good Insurance is About Preparation
The phrase “knock on wood” also captures something deeper about insurance itself.
Most people don’t want to dwell on risk. And we don’t blame them. Hope is a powerful thing. Optimism matters. We all want to believe that if we work hard, plan well, and do the right things, everything will turn out just fine.
But good insurance isn’t about fear — it’s about preparation.
It’s about hoping for the best while being ready for the worst. It’s about making sure that if something unexpected does happen, you’re not navigating it alone, and you’re not discovering gaps in coverage when it’s too late to fix them.
That’s why we believe strongly in proactive account reviews. In asking thoughtful questions. In talking through scenarios that feel uncomfortable — not to alarm, but to protect. Because when you work with an advisor who knows you, listens well, and understands your unique situation, insurance becomes a tool that supports peace of mind rather than anxiety.

The small wooden sign now sits in my office as a daily reminder of why we do what we do and who we are doing it for!
We’re grateful to serve a community that values relationships.
We’re grateful for clients who trust us with what matters most to them.
And yes — we’ll keep knocking on wood — but more importantly – we’ll keep doing the work to make sure our clients are well-prepared, no matter what comes their way.
